Reading 1 Southampton 2

The Royals were not playing well, yesterday. There were flashes of what they could have been like - in particular Jimmy Kebe, who scored the only goal, and was really worthwhile in the second half. But in general, Southampton absolutely ran rings around them.

Southampton are a younger team - the average age must be about 20 or 21, and their speed showed, especially in comparison with Stephen Hunt, who often seemed slow off the mark. He's usually a real strength, so that seemed a shame.

I have a feeling the fact that Reading lost a game that they should have won at home, is my fault, because it's now happened three of the four times I've been to watch. The first two were Bolton and Fulham last season. I suppose at least they got one back this weekend.

Reading had all the stats on their side - they were unbeaten at home this season, and came from a great win over Sheffield away. They were third in the table, compared to Southampton who were something like 15th. But the telling statistic was that Reading are ranked first in games against the top half of the table and only 16th in games against the bottom half, which indicates their shameful tendency to rest on their laurels.

Pull your socks up before Tuesday, guys.
